Drawing Fundamentals

(ideal for Painters too!) - 2 day workshop with Michelle Fleming

Suitable for Beginner to Advanced students

It's time to dust off your sketchbooks and connect with the world around you through drawing! We will look at a number of fundamentals that create a successful drawing: composition, achieving depth through value, perspective and shape relationships, as well as understanding light, shadow and movement in a work of art. We will begin with a number of fun exercises to help you loosen up and to learn to engage with ease the eye and the drawing hand. Different approaches to drawing will be addressed: gesture, continuous line, contour, volume and sustained drawing. A variety of drawing tools will be used to experiment interpreting the source.

Material List: - pencils (2B - 8B) - black sharpie marker - thin & thick - charcoal pencil (soft) - eraser & sharpener
Sketchbook: (9x12 or 11x14, weight of paper 98lbs or more) plus a small one that you can have on you wherever you go!
Optional: Pastels, coloured pencils and a portable water colour palette - drawing can be colourful as well!


2 day Watercolour with Art Cunanan

Themed Portrait Project - Mixed Media

Do you have someone special in your life or a memorable event that you wish to commemorate? Join us to create a fabulous, themed, mixed media art piece to keep or gift. All you need is a photograph to start. We will choose a theme: their career, hobby, sports, passion, fantasy or dream...Next, we will decide on the style: historical, futuristic, zany, contemporary, magical...Then, we will pull it all together using mixed media techniques including: image transfers, layering, collage, painting, staining, working with new acrylic mediums and texturing. It will be a packed two days and you will learn a ton. You will leave this workshop with a fabulous piece of unique art.

Material list: 1 panel /board/ substrate - minimum size 16 x 20”, largest 30 x 40”, paint brushes and acrylic paints (colours of your choice).
Provided by instructor: A selection of acrylic mediums, collage materials and tools for $10 fee.


Expressive Abstracts 1 day workshop with Sue Miller

Suitable for Beginner to Advanced students

Break out of that box! Quiet that 'inner critic'!
Using a series of warm up exercises, you will be exposed to several approaches to creating abstract paintings. The focus will be on "process", and through this you will tap into your authentic creative voice.

Material list: canvas - minimum size 18 x 24, large brushes, acrylic paint (red, yellow, blue, white) *impasto medium (optional), large palette knife, mixing palette

Provided by instructor: paper & paint for warm ups, brushes and water jugs


Spiral Wire Necklace

1 day workshop with Beverley Smith of Holy Crow Beads

Suitable for Beginner to Advanced students

Create a fabulous necklace with semi-precious stones, glass beads, wood and metal beads using artistic flexible wire. This is an easy technique for all students with great results.There will be large variety of materials provided for you to work with and explore. The randomly winding wire coil has an abstract effect in this beaded collar. This is a great project to have fun and be creative. Note: The turquoise beads in the photo are no longer available, but lots of other great choices will be on hand.

Painting the Dynamic Landscape in Watercolour

1 day workshop with Bonnie Steinberg

Suitable for all levels of students, including first timers.

Learn simple techniques for describing the dramatic contrasts of the changing landscapes of Ontario. In this 1 day workshop, we will concentrate on design and colour interpretation. Our subject matter will include a street scene, or a cityscape, complete with landscape elements, architectural elements. Atmospheric perspective through colour, and linear perspective will also be explored! Reference material will be supplied or you can bring your own. Materials:

Paint: (Artist Quality) of choice:
minimum palette - especially for beginners: permanent rose, cobalt blue & aureolin yellow
- or, 6 or more colours - 2 reds, 2 yellows, 2 blues
Please note: Students are always invited to bring the colours that they always use or want to learn to use.

Suggested Colours:
Aureolin,Yellow, Raw Sienna, Opera, Scarlet Lake, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Rose, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Blue (red shade and/or green shade), Winsor Red, French Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson (Permanent), New Gamboge or Indian Yellow, Viridian Green.

Brushes of Choice:
2" Robert Simmons white-sable-skyflow wash (*optional); 1" flat gold sable-clear hand, beveled end; #5 & #8 round gold sable; #3 or #4 rigger; #16 (½" x ½") flat gold sable (THIS IS A LIFTING BRUSH (OPTIONAL); 2" hake.

Paper:
Artist quality, i.e. Arches, or Winsor and Newton 140 lb and/or 300 lb (hot) smooth and cold press. Bring a back board if paper is in sheets, if not, blocks are suggested.

Palette:
Robert E. Woods or John Pike or equivalent – scrub each paint compartment (not mixing areas) with an SOS pad to rough up the surface so that the paint will stick.

Miscellaneous:
2 plastic containers (500 ml), Eraser, Tissues (Kleenex), HB or 6B pencils, Masking tape and masking fluid, Small natural silk sponge (Curry’s has these, so does Shopper’s Drug Mart), Sketch book, Ruler or set square for drawing.

Reference Materials:
The instructor will have colour references for $1 per colour copy. You are welcome to bring your own reference.


Abstracting the Landscape 1 day workshop with Sharon Barfoot

Suitable for Beginner to Advanced students

In this workshop we will discover the versatility and power of the abstract landscape to evoke mood, memory and emotion. Through its simplicity we can explore the use of colour and principles of composition while mining our own personal and emotional landscapes. We will begin with sketches, and proceed to small studies in paint. Our studies will then be translated to larger surfaces. Topics discussed: Understanding Abstract, Surface and Colour, The Evolving Process.

Material list:
Don’t feel obligated to purchase everything on this list. Bring what you think you will need and use.
Paints:
Acrylic paints, your choice of colours but make sure you have red, blue, yellow, white and black.
Brushes:
Your favourite brushes and one larger brush for spreading large washes.
Surfaces:
Canvas boards or your preferred work surface. I use mdf smooth both sides from Home Depot. 24” X 24”. Bring the boards gessoed on both sides and on the edges. 1 canvas at least 24 inches square.
Miscellaneous:
Spray bottle, Painters' tape of various sizes, Palette ( I use a wet palette), Roll of paper towels, Artist’s Sketchbook, maximum size 11x17, spiral bound for note taking, drawing pencils and/or brush pen for prep studies, Soft Pastel Sticks: A few colours. I use Daler-Rowney and one piece of white chalk (if you do not already have these then just share mine) & Color Wheel if you have one.


Zentangle half day workshops with Chari-Lynn Reithmeier

Learn this fabulous art of drawing that combines pen, ink, fun, relaxation, creativity and beauty. Chari-Lynn can show you how easily you can do it …one step at a time. You have the choice of either weekday or weekend classes.

Classes are offered on a variety of dates. They must be taken in order.
1 to 3:30 pm
Cost: $40 + $10 material fee for a different kit in each class.
Beginner Zentangle: Jan 12, Jan 21, Feb 1, Feb 25 or Mar 15
Intermediate Zentangle (White on Black): - Jan 28, Feb 15, Mar 11 or Mar 16
Advanced Zentangle (Renaissance): Feb 18, Feb 22 or Mar 18.


Open Studio Fridays

What a great way to be creative and enjoy the company of like-minded people. The studio at the Arts Centre will be open Fridays 1 - 4 pm every week, January 27 to March 24, 2017. Bring your art materials and work on your own projects in this wonderful space. Cost is $10 cash per session on a first come basis.
