Arend Nieuwland

In approaching art Arend looks for the simple essence of complex insights in order to create an international language; to share and communicate emotional expressions.

When Arend begins the process of creating a carving, he studies the shape of the stone and assesses the movement within the rock to read the interpretation of the form. The visual cues from the raw material guides the creative process and transforms the soapstone to the finished sculpture.

Arend is a retired art teacher who presently lives in Durham in the winter and works in his studio-gallery in Tobermory during the summer months. The studio gallery is open to the public. Various shows and exhibits throughout North America have displayed a wide variety of Arend's art. His art is well represented in the homes of many art collectors in many parts of the world.
